Among it's mystical and medicinal properties, the henna plant's (Lawsonia Inermis is its botanical name) chief ability is to cool down the human body. When the desert people of Rajasthan, Punjab, and Gujarat became aware of henna's ability to cool, they dipped their hands and feet in a mud paste made with crushed henna leaves. When the mud was scraped off, they noticed that as long as the color remained visible, their body temperatures stayed low. Eventually, they found one large dot in the palm of the hand had the same effect. Other small dots were placed around it which gradually gave way to artistic designs. As a medicinal property, henna is used as a coagulator for open wounds. When used as a poultice made with henna leaves it soothes burns and certain cases of eczema. Its inherent mentally soothing qualities are another reason why mehndi is traditionally performed on the palms of the hand.
